Lost Pines Scout Ranch and neighboring LCRA and ranch properties – Erosion Control
Several areas of the camp are experiencing extreme erosion, which is causing a loss of land and adding sediment and Total Dissolved Solids to the lake. Scouts will need to research erosion control methods, determine the best practice for a given area and build the erosion control. Additional care may need to be taken to ensure that invasive plants do not take over the area before natives can become established.

Lost Pines Scout Ranch and neighboring LCRA and ranch properties – Invasive Species Removal
Marking and removing exotics, such as chinaberry, giant reed and ligustrum. All three plants are invasive and will form monocultures if left uncontrolled. Scouts will need to remove the invasive plants using approved methods and repopulate the area with native plants.

Lost Pines Scout Ranch and neighboring LCRA and ranch properties - Create a HawkWatch Station
Numerous birds of prey use Lake Bastrop as a food source and home. Both the Aububon Society and HawkWatch need sites created and monthly or year bird surveys completed. While working with Hawkwatch is the goal of this example, bird surveys of any kind will help the camp.

Lost Pines Scout Ranch and neighboring LCRA and ranch properties - Plant and forest surveys
To better understand the health of the camp, plant, forest and riparian surveys need to be completed at the camp. Scouts would need to develop nested plot surveys and identify all plants in an area. This data will then be reported as part of the ongoing work to restore habitat for the Houston toad at Lost Pines.

Lake Bastrop Water Quality Study
This year the Scout Summer Camp began testing water quality at Lake Bastrop. This testing needs to be continued, along with a complete lake quality assessment. The shoreline testing could be a great Hornaday Unit Award project, while the lake quality assessment would require either physical or biological water quality assessments in the open water part of the Lake. Both would require monthly monitoring with Council owned kits.
* Requirements: Scouts will need Core Water Quality Training and lake assessment. Scouts will need to recruit volunteers who have the canoeing merit badge and leaders with Safety Afloat.
